  • I’d been using linux for work for a couple years and it was going fine. I had a pretty crappy laptop at home with limited storage and I was constantly wrestling with Windows storing update stuff, installing adware during updates, etc.

I’d heard of proton and about how well it was going with it, so I had an idea linux gaming was possible.

Eventually something happened during a windows update that required I reinstall the OS and I just pulled out the flash drive I used to install linux on my work machine and tried it out. Eventually I did have to dual boot (on a bigger drive) for some games, but nowadays I’m all linux everywhere.

  • I really believe that this has nothing to do with kids. “For the kids” has made me suspicious of intentions for a long time. It makes it difficult to argue against it because it implies that you’re a pedo or are doing something illegal otherwise. You implement general monitoring “for the kids”, and then you add some anti piracy stuff to it, then you add some hate group detection, some anti government group detection, etc. Now you have everything you need to get ahead of any danger to the government. If the people can’t organize, you can do whatever you want.

  • I would like to pay for YT Premium, but I think the service is bad. The product is good, and the service is bad.

If I say I don’t want to see this video, I don’t want to see this fucking video again, youtube. I said don’t recommend this channel, and you said I won’t see it again, but I just refreshed, and there it is. I am not dutch, I don’t speak dutch, I’ve never even been to the Netherlands. I shouldn’t be seeing videos in dutch.

Routinely, I have to go through my home page and try to train the algorithm but I’ve just given up. I got an extension now that just permanently removes channels and videos I don’t want to see.

The thing is… the product is the videos, and youtube doesn’t do the videos. Youtube does the service, and the service is bad. I understand that the ads pay the youtubers but the truth is I don’t care. That pay is trash, and if they want my premium money, youtubers should unionize and force youtube to improve the service.

Edit: I watch the youtuber’s sponsor spot and I buy merch.

  • When you join a company early, and there aren’t many other people employed, you make much more of a difference than if you’re one of thousands. You have much more influence in defining the product, steering the direction of the company, defining the workplace culture.

You’re not wrong that employees are replaceable, and the company will replace you if it needs or wants to, but in the beginning, it can very much feel like you’re part of a group of people who are working together to effectively build lives, support their families, interests, etc. The company isn’t just a legal entity that exchanges money for labor, it’s a thing you’re helping build with a kind of community, that you’re investing time into in exchange for the means to a better life.
