Genuinely surprised to see this comment so high up, with so many more upvotes than downvotes. I personally have no problem with Threads, and some of the higher-profile celebrities, comics and artists I want to follow are already there. That I can add other fediverse accounts to my feed, or add Threads accounts into my Mastadon/Lemmy apps, it’s a win.

I’m not oblivious to why folks don’t like it and want no part of Zuckerberg’s companies. I still prefer open platforms to closed ones, and Zuck seems to understand that too. I personally don’t buy the EEE fears. This ain’t Microsoft.

The users give the site a pretty broad license for their content. Calling it the user’s data is a moot point.

Don’t even recall if the Lemmy instance I use has a TOS, but it’s likely the server owner has similar rights just by the nature of how this tech works.

And Microsoft keeps enshitifying Windows because they know they can get away with it. So many businesses are backed into a corner and have essential parts of their business that are only compatible with Microsoft’s tech. They can’t switch, they won’t even entertain the idea (much less the time/energy required to test it out). The folks at Microsoft know they’ve won. I won’t be surprised when they make Windows 12’s compatibility even more egregious than 11’s.

Meta wants to federate with the whole fediverse eventually. This is first up, then Threads. Remains to be seen if they’ll bother with a Lemmy instance but I wouldn’t be shocked.

So far though the response by the fediverse has been “nah”.

It seems pretty good with backgrounds though, and it’s only going to get better. I think the threats of job losses are a lot more imminent than people are ready to admit.

I put my account’s comment through a mass-delete app around the time of the big protest, and a couple weeks later I found every single one was restored.

People can be incompetent for years and then suddenly start figuring things out.

Because MS puts work into backwards compatibility, so the business who paid someone to write an app for them 30 years ago can still use it today on a Win11 box. No shot of that happening on macOS, who has deprecated PowerPC and 32-bit support, and Linux is just too much of a wildcard.

It’s also about the customer having better options beyond “modify the ever-living shit out of Windows until it behaves”. Microsoft only does these things because they know how many hundreds of millions of customers are locked into their ecosystem. No matter what they do, no matter how poorly they treat their customers, they’ll keep coming back to buy more! So why should they care? Why should they slow down or offer some privacy-friendly version for anything below $1000 per person? Hell, I’m surprised Microsoft hasn’t been steadily raising the price of Windows over the years. Not like the customers are going to actually switch, right?

Exactly this. To normal people the computer in their house is merely a tool; just another appliance that needs to work every time without any fuss.

I’m not sure I follow. Are you looking to add any app to your phone that would fulfill the CarPlay features like maps/music/phone on the car’s display? I’m only using Apple’s OS these days so I can’t speak to Android, but presently you can use any music app, any maps app, and any communications app that supports Apple’s API. Are you saying you want other apps to be able to send that experience to the car, and/or are you looking for a FLOSS system to run on the car itself?

Firefox’s total global market share is 3.3%. They’re practically losing their influence over the web with numbers that small. So while I’m generally in favor of letting people access the web however they’d like, I’m not naive to the idea of advocating for the little guy.
